Collaborative Art Project
By Jackie Campbell
On May 1, 2025, the third grade students joined the high school art students for a project reveal at the high school gym. Around Halloween, the third graders, during their art time with Mrs. Johnson, were asked to draw a picture of a monster of their own creation…and they certainly didn’t hold back with their designs! All of the drawings depict very unique monsters; some could fly, some had combinations of several different animals, some had special features of stripes, spots, hair, horns, antlers, spikes, etc….. The drawings then got passed on to Mrs. Campbell and her high school art students. The high school class was given the challenge of turning the drawings into three-dimensional plaster sculptures, and to tell the truth, some drawings were hard to interpret! The high school art students had to brainstorm to solve problems like how to get the monster to stand or sit. They had to figure out if it was hair or a spike. They also had to plan out the color choices and how to finish it out in a way that the third graders would approve. Overall, the three-dimensional monsters looked pretty close to the drawings. The high school students had no idea until before the reveal who their “little" was so everyone was surprised to discover who they had been collaborating with. Both student groups paired up for a short conversation and got a group picture together each holding their art projects. The drawings along with the sculptures were displayed at the All School Art Show at the high school and the following day they went to the grade school to be displayed there. The high school students gifted their projects to the third grade students, which they will take home before school lets out at the end of the year. A special reminder of the little monsters they created together.
