NASA Astronaut Tyler N. "Nick" Hague to visit hometown of Hoxie, Kan.

Hoxie, Kan. ⸺ The community of Hoxie, Kan. is pleased to welcome home Hoxie native and NASA Astronaut, Col. Tyler N. “Nick” Hague (U.S. Space Force) on Friday, Nov. 11 for a day of school and public presentations, sharing about his experiences as an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

Hague, is a 1994 graduate of Hoxie High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Astronautical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1998, and a Master of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000.

In 2009, Hague was selected for the Air Force Fellows program in Washington, D.C., and was a staff member in the United States Senate. Following his fellowship, he served in the Pentagon as a congressional appropriations liaison for United States Central Command.

Selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013, Hague completed astronaut candidate training in July 2015. He was selected for a mission to the International Space Station which launched on October 11, 2018. Unfortunately, he and his crewmate Alexey Ovchinin, of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, were forced to abort the mission when a rocket booster experienced a malfunction shortly after the launch of their Soyuz MS-10. The aborted spacecraft landed safely.

Hague re-launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station on March 14, 2019. Together with fellow Astronaut Cristina Koch and the international crew of Expeditions 59 and 60, they conducted or participated in hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science, including investigations into devices that mimic the structure and function of human organs, freeflying robots, and an instrument to measure Earth’s distribution of carbon dioxide. Hague conducted three spacewalks during his mission, totaling 19 hours and 56 minutes with a total of 203 days in space. He and Ovchinin returned to Earth on October 4, 2019, along with the first United Arab Emirates astronaut Hazza Al Mansouri, who launched September 25, 2019 aboard the Soyuz MS-15. View Hague’s full biography on the NASA website at https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/tyler-nick-hague.

Hague’s visit in Hoxie will include a morning presentation for the the Hoxie USD 412 and Golden Plains USD 316 school districts from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Hoxie High School Auditorium, 1625 Queen.

A presentation for the public is scheduled that evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m., also at the auditorium, with a “meet & greet” to follow in the high school library. Public from around the area are invited to attend the in-person presentation.

Both presentations will be streamed live. Details will be shared on the school’s website at http://www.hoxie.org.

The NASA Astronaut visit is sponsored by Hoxie Community Schools USD 412, the Sheridan County Community Foundation, Scott & Michelle Foote Family & Foote Cattle Company, and the City of Hoxie, Kansas.

For more information regarding the visit, please contact Mary Ellen Welshhon at Hoxie Schools at 785-675-3258 or mewelshhon@hoxie.org.
