HOWTO: Add the Red Calendar to iOS

iPhone/iPad/iPod

July 17, 2014

Summary

If you have an Apple device (iPhone/iPad/iPod), you are running iOS.  To access the Red Calendar on iOS, you have a few options:

  1. Safari app
  2. Calendar app
    1. with Google account
    2. without Google account
  3. Third-party calendar app

This article will cover each of these.

Safari App

Perhaps the easiest way to view the Red Calendar online is to use the iOS web browser, Safari.  Any other web browser app you might have installed should work as well.  Though easy to access, the calendar might be difficult to view and navigate in this format as it is not optimized for mobile devices.

Note: If you are reading this article on a mobile device, skip to step 4 and tap the link in the step itself.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Enter 'hoxie.org' (without the quotes) in the address bar (at the top of your screen) and then tap "Go" on the keyboard.
  3. Tap the three horizontal lines (they look like window blinds) in the upper lefthand corner of the page. A menu will appear.
  4. Scroll down, if necessary, to find the Calendar link and tap it.

A new browser tab will open and display the Red Calendar.

Calendar App

iOS has a built-in app called "Calendar".  When you create accounts on your iOS device, some of those accounts might have calendar information associated with them.  Google accounts have this information.  If you already have a Google account, such as Gmail or your company's Google Apps, then you can subscribed to the Red Calendar as described in this article here.

With a Google Account

If you have a Google account, but it is not yet synced to your iOS device, tap here to listen to instructions for doing so.

If you already have your Google account synced on your iOS device, ensure you have your calendars synced to your device.

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device.
  2. Scroll down and tap 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'
  3. Tap your Google account.
  4. Flip the switch next to 'Calendars' to make it green.

After completing the steps above, there might be a few more steps you need to do in order to have subscribed calendars appear in your Calendar app.

  1. Open this article you are reading in a web browser.
  2. Tap this link.
  3. Sign into your Google account.
  4. Check the Calendars in your Google account which you would like to appear in your Calendar app.
  5. Tap the "Save" button in the lower right corner.

You should now see the Red Calendar populate the Calendar app.  If not, try scrolling through the weeks until you see a new event to ensure the sync was successful.

Without a Google Account

If you do not have a Google account, don't worry.  You can still add the Red Calendar to your iOS device.

  1. Open this article your are reading in a web browser on your device.
  2. Tap and hold this link for a second and then release.
  3. Tap "Copy", "Copy Link URL" or the equivelant in your browser.
  4. Open "Settings".
  5. Scroll down and tap "Mail, Contacts, Calendars".
  6. Tap "Add Account...".
  7. Scroll down and tap "Other".
  8. Tap "Add Subscribed Calendar".
  9. In the "Server" field, tap, hold for a second, then release.
  10. Tap "Paste".
  11. Tap "Next" in the upper right corner.
  12. Tap "Save".

You should now see the Red Calendar populate the Calendar app.  If not, try scrolling through the weeks until you see a new event to ensure the sync was successful.

Third-party App

A third-party app is one you will find in the App Store.  There are many from which to choose.  As such, we cannot give instructions on how to use a third-party calendar app.  In a general sense, you use these calendars apps to sync with a calendar account, such as a Google account, and not directly to a calendar.

Why use a third-party app?

  • Better performance.
  • Better layout.
  • More features.

Of course, this all depends on your specific needs for a calendar app.  In most cases, the built in iOS Calendar app is more than enough for most users.
