Hoxie 8th Graders Conquer State Capitol and Kansas History
TOPEKA — On Wednesday, March 4, the Hoxie 8th-grade class traveled to the state capital for a day of hands-on history and civic engagement.
The students began their day with a tour of the Kansas State Capitol, where they viewed the famous Tragic Prelude mural and visited the ceremonial office of Governor Laura Kelly. The trip took an exciting turn while the class was visiting the Senate gallery; local Senator Rick Billinger spotted the group and took the time to meet with them, pose for a photo, and answer students' questions about the legislative process.
Following lunch, the group shifted its focus to civil rights history at the Monroe School, the National Historic Site for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case.
The day concluded with a physical challenge: the Capitol dome tour. Many students conquered their fears as they climbed 296 steps to the top of the dome for a bird’s-eye view of the city. It was an unforgettable day of learning and adventure for the Hoxie class.
