HHS senior Josh Heim receives the Ed Davis Award from Kim Stewart. This award goes to the student with outstanding production project. This is the third year in a row that a Hoxie student has won this award. Josh made a triple dresser out of red oak, finished with golden oak stain.

Students from Hoxie Junior/Senior High School displayed their woodworking projects in the Fort Hays State University Industrial Technology Fair April 30 and May 1.  These projects were judged on overall appearance, craftsmanship, construction, finish, and difficulty.  They compete for awards given to the outstanding project of their class and category.

For the third year in a row, the Hoxie program was awarded the prestigious Ed Davis award.  This award is given to the outstanding production project of the fair.  Earning this award was a project completed by senior Josh Heim.  Heim designed and built a triple dresser made of Red Oak which was stained with a golden oak stain.  This was entered in the 12th Grade Woodworking division.

Thirteen High School students took nineteen projects to the fair.  Freshman Easton Slipke received a red (excellent) ribbon on his walnut cedar chest.  Freshmen Landon Heim, Latham Schwarz, and Zack Sherman received blue ribbons (Superior) on their nightstands and jewelry boxes. Landon and Zack’s nightstands also received medallions (Outstanding) awards.  Latham and Zack received medallions on their jewelry boxes.   Sophomores receiving blue ribbons were Conner Depenbusch, Tristan Porsch, and Broderick Cross.  Conner’s nightstand also received a medallion and was selected as the best sophomore woodworking project of the fair.  Conner also received a blue ribbon and medallion on his entry of a jewelry box.  Junior Colin Heim received a blue ribbon and medallion on his walnut bed.  Senior entries receiving blue ribbon include Josh Heim’s triple dresser, Conner Katt’s oak gun cabinet, Wade Niermeier’s oak desk, Tyler Ewer’s gun cabinet, and Tanner Smith’s roll-top desk.  Josh, Tyler , Tanner, and Wade received medallions on their entries.  Josh’s dresser was judged as the best Senior project of the fair.

Seventh and eighth grade students displayed a total of one hundred-thirty-two projects.  Thirteen of these entries received white ribbons (good), nineteen were judged excellent and received red ribbons.  The remaining one hundred all received superior blue ribbons.  Sean Robben was also awarded a medallion for his super clip entry.

FHSU Technology Studies Department sponsored a problem-solving competition which Hoxie Junior and Senior High School students competed in.  This year the students were given a dowel rod, a nail, washers, and some masking tape to build a spinning top. They also had to make a working drawing of their top and explain the steps in the designing and building of their top. Each of the three parts was awarded a certain number of points. The eighth grade team consisting of Jake Geisinger, Jarrod Dible, and Dayton Porsch won their division by making a top using the nail, washer and tape.  Their top spun for a very long time amazing the spectators with a big applause as the top finally fell over and stopped.  The team of Hoxie High School students consisting of Colin Heim, Tristan Porsch, Wade Niermeier, Tyler Ewers, and Conner Katt won the Senior High division.  They used the dowel rod, cardboard, washer, and
