First Grade Student Testing

The first graders will have a new spelling list each week. On Friday I will  post the new word list on the newsletter found on my web page.  The children will take home a printed newsletter.  We will work on the words through the week.  Please review them with your child.  On Thursday we will take a practice test.  If a student receives a perfect score they will not have to take a final test on Friday.  The list will consist of 6 spelling words that focus on our current vowel sound.  They will also be given two high frequency challenge words.  The spelling words will be incorporated into the reading stories, language projects, and phonics lessons.  The reading series does a wonderful job of linking all of the areas together.

The children will also be given a reading test at the end of each story and reader.  I will send home these results as we take the tests.  The first grade series consists of five readers.  There is also a mid-year and final test that is given.  Mrs. Frazey, the Title 1 Teacher will give the children a reading test three times during the year.  Each student will also be given the DIBELS test three times.  In math the children will be tested at the end of each chapter.  This is a great opportunity to learn test taking skills that the students will use throughout their school career.  I will try my best to make them feel comfortable and to have a positive environment for this challenge.

The class will be taking two math tests at the end of each unit.  One is a performance test that I will give to each individual student.  The other one is a written test that will be given as a class.

We will be enjoying a weekly Social Studies Newspaper.  At the end of the unit there is a simple test .  This  will be a great chance to improve our test taking strategies.
