Mitchel Johnson, Hoxie eighth grader, won the bobble-head spelling trophy in the Sheridan County Spelling Bee on February 3, 2010. He lasted through seven rounds of competition, spelling the words exhaust and monopolize correctly to capture the title. Sixth graders Sydney Dingler and Terran Hoyt came in second and third respectively. Terran went out on the word pharmacy and Sydney missed the word apprentice.
Mitchel will advance to regional competition in Great Bend on March 13.
Ten students, two each from grades four through eight, participated in the competition. Kim Robben and Peggy Eland served as judges and Julie Carter pronounced the words for the contest, which is sponsored by The Great Bend Tribune.
