Birthday & Half-Birthday Treats

May 04, 2010

Birthday and Half-Birthday Treats:

You may send a small treat to school for your child's birthday if you wish; however, this is not required.

Please let me know in advance if you plan to send something.  We sometimes have children with food allergies or several birthdays or half-birthdays in the same week.  If you contact me early we can avoid “birthday overload” on the same day!

We do celebrate half-birthdays for those children who have summer birthdays.  (June birthdays in December – July birthdays in January – August birthdays in February).

In the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, the U.S. Congress established a new requirement that all school districts with a federally-funded school meals program develop and implement wellness policies that address nutrition and physical activity by the start of the 2006-2007 school year.  The guidelines for this program are listed in the USD 412 Parent-Student handbook.  It is recommended that you choose classroom party food that meets the following criteria:

  1. Fat – Except for nuts, seeds and nut butters, 35% or less of total calories from fat (or less than 4 g. per 100 calories)
  2. Sugar – Except for fruit without added sugar, 35% or less of weight from total sugar (or less than 9 g. per 100 calories)
  3. Calories – 200 calories or less per serving

The following food items are some suggestions.

  • Rice Krispie treats
  • Fruit snacks, Fruit Roll-ups, etc.
  • Handi Snacks pudding cups
  • Fresh fruit (which the kids usually love because we can’t afford to have it frequently!)
  • Cheese
  • Non-food items such and pencils, stickers, etc.
