Cross Country Season Preview

2000 Indians to Field Boys and Girls Teams

by Tom Friess

September 01, 2008

The 2008 cross country season began on August 18th at 6:30 AM with ten runners in attendance. The boys and girls were evenly split with five each and will thus be able to field squads at meets as the season progresses. On August 25th, another boy came out giving us a total of 11 runners to work with this year.

The girls team is coming off a 4th place finish at state in Class 1A and returns two runners from that squad in the persons of Stephanie Eberle and Shayla Niermeier. Regan Ochs also returns but will be unable to perform this year due to another setback with her feet. Joined by newcomers Jenna Patmon, Kelsi Heskett and Kaycee Niermeier the Indians hope to work their way back to Wamego by training hard and giving it all they have got.

The boys team will feature four year veteran Trevor Popp and three year vet Corey Heier. Corey is a returning All-NWKL performer and had a string of seven consecutive medals snapped at Regional. They will be joined by four frosh in Luke Friess, Kollyn Schippers, Jeffery Shaw and Patrick Weber. The boys also hope to earn a trip to state as a team; a feat that would be a first for our program.

After a week of two - a - days, which culminated with a 3 x 1 mile time trial set for the boys and Mile - Mile - Half - Mile set for the girls, the Indians have settled into their after - school practice sessions where they seek to gain the strength and consistency necessary for success in this sport.
