What is Happening in Pre-K?
August 21 - 29, 2008

***Since each class has only one day of school this first week, this note will have information for this week and next.***

I hope you had a chance to read through all of the information that was handed out at enrollment.  We are sending home more today!!  Included with this letter is a daily schedule, August calendar of events, show & tell schedule, medical release form and additional birthday information.  Please fill out and return the medical release as soon as possible.  We can’t take your child on a field trip (even around the block) without it.

This is a weekly letter that I will send home to keep you informed of all that is happening during the week.  l include information about things your child is doing at school as well as reminders of upcoming events.    This note will usually be sent home at the beginning of the week and it will NOT be as lengthy as this one!!!

Thursday & Friday, August 21 - 22:  We are reading the book “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” and we will have a lot of alphabet and getting to know each other activities!  We will also take a tour of the school.  We will start out with a relaxed, slow-paced schedule, since it takes a while at the beginning of the year for the kids to become familiar with how to put on a take off gym shoes, wait in line for drinks and bathroom, etc.!!

August 25 - 29:  This week we will start our “Who We Are” theme.

í         Alphabet Time:  We will distinguish sound position.  I will make three sounds and the kids will tell what sound was first and which was last.  We will also learn to distinguish printed words from pictures and review colors and body parts.  This unit has a general overview of the whole alphabet – we will sing the ABC song A LOT during the next few weeks – then we will get into learning each letter in the next unit.

í         Book Time:  We will read the books My Big Day (which is one of the kids favorite books!!) and Hurray for Pre-K!.   We will also create a list of activities that we do at school each day

í       Content Areas:  We will also have some group activities for music, social studies, math and handwriting.  We will begin some of our Handwriting Without Tears activities by introducing the kids to the wood pieces that we will use throughout the year.

Centers

I will always give you a description of some of the different centers so you can ask your child specific questions about his/her school day.  Many of our centers this week are designed to help the children get comfortable in the room and get to know each other.

§         Art:  We will make “Me” murals this week using cut out paperdoll people for the kids to decorate like themselves.  We will later add descriptive words around their little person that they feel describe themselves.

§         Carpet:  We will have several different activities this week that will help the kids practice sharing and cooperation!  We will have the dollhouse and family props, the cars and car mat and blocks.

§         Math & Science:  We will have several sorting activities at this center.

§         Writing:  The older classes will start in their Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) workbooks this week.  We will have a few weeks to practice correct pencil grasp before we begin on letters.

§         Library:  This week we will have the smaller book of “My Big Day” as well as story props for the kids to use while re-telling the story.

§         Hands On:  We will review the alphabet with several different activities this week including ABC puzzles and magnetic letters.
