STUDENTS SHINE AT FHSU INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOW

Forty-three students from Hoxie Junior and Senior High School displayed their projects in the Ft. Hays State University Industrial Technology Fair May 1st and 2nd, 2008. These projects were judged on overall appearance, craftsmanship, construction, finish and difficulty.
For the second year in a row, the Hoxie program was awarded the prestigious Ed Davis award. This award is given to the outstanding production project of the fair. Earning this award was a project completed by Josh Gaede. Gaede designed and built a triple dresser made of walnut that was entered in the 12th grade woodworking division.
Seven Hoxie students were awarded best of their class and division. Josh Gaede received the outstanding Senior Woodworking award for his dresser. James Kaufman received the outstanding Junior Woodworking award for his poster bed and two nightstands. Kaufman also was given the 11th grade Arts and Crafts award with an entry of a post office door truck bank. Troy Ostmeyer received the outstanding Freshman Woodworking award for his display of a walnut cedar chest. Receiving outstanding 8th Grade Arts and Crafts Award for her post office bank was Sheyenne Dillehay. Ellisa Heim won the best 7th Grade Woodworking award with her entry of a walnut mantel clock while Matt Heim was given the best 7th grade Arts and Crafts award with his entry of a cherry recipe card holder.
Receiving medals for outstanding entries were Seniors Cass Baalman with his display of a cherry triple dresser, Cody Best with his display of an oak armoire, and Josh Gaede on his walnut triple dresser. Juniors receiving medals for their entries include Jon Johnson for his entry of an oak chest of drawers, James Kaufman on his walnut poster bed as well as on his two matching nightstands and truck bank, Cody Pope on his oak entertainment center, and Duane Wente III on his walnut coffee table. Sophomore Coby Baalman received a medal on his cherry armoire. Four freshmen entries were given medals. Danny Baker received a medal on his oak cedar chest as did Troy Ostmeyer on his walnut cedar chest. Dylan Bainter and Cayle Taylor received medals on each of their nightstand entries. Eighth grader Sheyenne Dillehay received a medal on her P.O. Box bank. 7th grade students receiving medals were Lincoln Talbott, Matt Heim, Ellisa Heim, Brady Bainter, Kane Washington and Steven Yergey for their mantel clock entries, and Calvin Ochs for his acid etched mug. Elissa Heim received another medal for her Kansas pen-paperclip desk entry. Matt Heim and Marlee McKenna both received medals on their salt and pepper/ napkin holders.
Those students receiving Blue (Superior) or Red (Excellent) ribbons were Seniors Cass Baalman, Cody Best, Adam Farber, Dustin Cunningham, and Josh Gaede. Junior winners include Jon Johnson, James Kaufman, Cody Pope, Trevor Pope, Josh Taylor, and Duane Wente III. Sophomore Coby Baalman also received a blue ribbon in addition to his medal. Freshman ribbon winners included Dylan Bainter, Donovan Schamberger, Cayle Taylor, Danny Baker, and Troy Ostmeyer. Eighth Grade students winning ribbons were Taylor Hawks, Austin Stewart, Patrick Weber, Ian Rowlison, Kaycee Niermeier, Sheyenne Dillehay, Jaxen Moss, Colton Spresser, and Britton Sealock. Seventh Grade students winning ribbons include Brady Bainter, P.J. Carter, Chalise Christensen, Matt Heim, Chris Juarez, Troy Marvin, Marlee McKenna, Calvin Ochs, Alexis Sewell, Danel Stithem, Steven Yergey, Lincoln Talbott, Courtney Schamberger, Katie Baker, Cameron Nelson, Ellisa Heim, Brenda Burden, Brandon Salmans, and Kane Washington.
In conjunction with the fair, FHSU Technology Studies sponsored a problem-solving competition. Students participating in this activity included Seniors Josh Gaede, Cody Best, Cass Baalman, and Juniors James Kaufman and Cody Pope.
