Scholars Bowl Team Competes at Regionals
February 28, 2008
On January 31, 2008, the Hoxie High School Scholars’ Bowl team traveled to Brewster for the 1A Regional Competition. The team of five returning seniors: Jennifer Heim, Jessica Campbell, Jacob Bracht, Tom Sewell, and Jacob Morgan, and one novice senior, Evan White, looked to qualify for the State Scholars’ Bowl for the first time in school history.
The meet was set up into two pools for the first round. The Indians just barely made it out of the first pool play with a record of 3-2. The final round was made up of the top six teams.
Things were not looking good for Hoxie with losses to Wallace County and Golden Plains early in the round. The Indians needed to beat two of their toughest competitors, Quinter and Greeley County, to have a shot at the title. Though the Indians have had problems beating the Quinter team in the past, they managed to come out on top at the meet.
With one more round to go in the tournament, the Indians came up against statistically their toughest competition, Greeley County. Greeley County has been undefeated in several past meets and had a spotless record for the day. The match-up was neck-and-neck, with Hoxie up by one question. As the “Year in Review” question came up the room grew tense. Time ran out and a sigh of relief escaped from the Hoxie team.
Unfortunately, the last win wasn’t enough to put the Indians in a position to go to state. They finished the night in a three-way tie with Golden Plains and Quinter. After tallying up the points, Hoxie was just three questions short of a second place finish.
“I’m glad I have had the opportunity to work with this group of students the last two years. I couldn’t ask for a better bunch to help prepare me for the role of Scholars’ Bowl coach. Placing third at the Regional tournament was a great disappointment to them, but to me it was a great achievement. Even though we didn’t make it to State, placing third out of eleven teams is not something to complain about. I’m proud of them for giving their all,” said Scholars’ Bowl coach, Jackie Campbell, “I’m looking forward to next year’s Scholars Bowl tournaments. The JV team has also done an outstanding job this year.”
